In 1982 Filmexport Group consolidated its position as a prominent company in the business of film by launching Production Group, its sister company operating in the production and co-production of motion pictures for both the Italian and the international markets. Thanks to Filmexport Group's long-lasting experience as a seller and to its profound knowledge of the different foreign markets, Production Group started its activity with the creation of features aimed at satisfying the needs and tastes of a wide international audience. The titles produced during the eighties range from classics like CALIGULA AND MESSALINA or NERO AND POPPEA, to horror cult movies such as HITCHER IN THE DARK, METAMORPHOSIS, WITCHCRAFT, GHOSTHOUSE and BEYOND DARKNESS, from the internationally recognised movies directed by Joe D'Amato, like HIGH FINANCE WOMAN, BLUE ANGEL CAFE' and PASSION'S FLOWER to thrillers like RATS, NIGHT OF TERROR, VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN'S PRISON and BLADE VIOLENT, or romantic features such as HOT STEPS. Shot directly in English on locations in the United States, these feature films have sold amazingly well worldwide and are still much sought-after by specific genre lovers.
After a whole decade of experience in the production business, Production Group reverted to its original faith in the Italian historical tradition of high standard quality cinema with the production of MARCELLINO PANE E VINO (MARCELINO BREAD AND WINE), Luigi Comencini's remake of the original Spanish movie.
It also gave origin to a fruitful co-operation with European production companies such as French UGC or Spanish VIDEO MERCURY FILMS, that is still active today.
Fully Italian produced are the mid-ninety features films PALERMO MILANO SOLO ANDATA, CELLULOIDE and LA LUPA, a triptych that helped Production Group achieve a solid recognition as production company in both the Italian and the international industry of cinema. Directed by young and talented Claudio Fragasso and starring famous Giancarlo Giannini, PALERMO MILANO SOLO ANDATA ( DARING YOUNG ) is an entertaining road movie, it has been awarded as Best Production at the 1996 edition of the David di Donatello, apart from having been a box office hit during that season. With LA LUPA ( SHE-WOLF ) directed by Gabriele Lavia, Production Group turned to the theatrical adaptation of a literature classic, and succeeded in obtaining a recognition for it as "movie of national-cultural interest". Even more linked to traditional cinema is CELLULOIDE ( CELLULOID ), an emotional cult movie and an homage to Roberto Rossellini's masterpiece ROMA CITTA' APERTA.
In 2000 and 2001, Production Group signed for the acquisition of the Bigas Luna's film, VOLAVERUNT, the Swedish movie UNDER THE SUN, nominated as Best Foreign Picture at the Academy Awards, the British comedy SEXY BEAST, starring Ben Kinsley.
In 2000 Production Group in co-production with Planet Pictures made its debut in the production with QUELLO CHE LE RAGAZZE NON DICONO (WHAT GIRLS NEVER SAY) by Carlo Vanzina. After this experience, Production Group in 2001 entered into a co-production with the Spanish company Enrique Cerezo P.C. for the film directed by Vicente Aranda JUANA LA LOCA, awarded with the Silver Seashell Award for Best Actress (Pilar López de Ayala) and Golden Seashell Nomination (Vicente Aranda), at San Sebastian International Film Festival. Moreover, in 2003 and 2004, once again in association with Planet Pictures entered into two co-productions with Spain and more specifically, with the company Starline Productions for the film CARMEN directed by Vicente Aranda, with Panico Films for the latest picture of Alex De la Iglesia CRIMEN FERPECTO, with Patagonik Film Production of Juan Pablo Buscarini NOAH’S ARK
